Bella Bella Community School Events
Throughout the school year the Bella Bella community school society puts on many events outside of regular school hours as well as special events during some school days. These events are advertised on the community television channel, in newletters, and on the local VHF channel six. School Events are listed on the right. Children's Cultural Celebration
The highlight of our school events each year is the Children's Cultural Celebration. This Potlatch is given by the students of Bella Bella, with direction from the Heiltsuk language department. The potlatch involves speeches and presentations by the students, traditional foods, and various cultural dances. Other schools interested in coming to participate are encouraged to phone the school at (250) 957-2391 and speak to the Heiltsuk Language Department.
Craft Days
Each year, Bella Bella Community School students participate in two craft days. The Fist craft day is usually the week before Christmas, and students make christmas ornaments, decorations, or presents for them to give away for Christmas. The Second Craft day is for making items to give away at the Children's Cultural Celebration. Because the Cultural Celebration is a Potlatch, the giving of gifts is very important. Students work hard to create crafts such as small drums, paddles, ceder bark roses, and much more.
Family Nights
Each year the school puts on several family nights for the community. These family nights are tied to a particular theme, such as Math games or Literacy, allowing students and parents to come and join in fun educational activities.
Science Week
Each year our science week teaches students about what scientists are learning and studying in Heiltsuk territory. Students went out on boat trips to learn about culturally-modified trees, studied sealife that was brought up by divers, and had guest presenters from various outside agencies such as the Sierra Club. Each year our science week gets a little bit bigger and better!
